Including fish of 7lb, 2 x 6lb and 5lb from the lakes

“Heavy rain brought the river level to bank-full on a couple of occasions but all the lakes remained fishable throughout the week.
Several large fish were caught (using BFD, Montana, PTN, White Booby). Other successful flies included Pale midge, Beaded shrimp, Black spider, Buzzer, CDC midge, Daddy, Klinkhammer, Perdigon and Greenwell’s Glory.”

“Several sea trout were encountered on the river last week, along with a good number of browns. Green marabou, Ally’s shrimp, daddy and zonker were all successful.

On the lakes, Montana, GRHE, CDC buzzer, BFD, Perdigon, Butcher and PTN all produced good sport.”

Over the weekend at Great Springs and Little Springs, the fish rose well in the morning feeding on buzzers. The activity petered out as the day progressed. Small black buzzers fished static worked well.

At Little Bognor, stealth and accurate casting produced several trout on small black flies.

“A good week throughout the fishery. Some fine larger fish were amongst those caught on the lakes, whilst the Rother lived up to its reputation as a late-fishing river with some excellent sport being had.
On the lakes, daddy long-legs was the most successful fly, along with Klinkhammer, CDC buzzer, GRHE, BFD and the odd dry fly. On the river, a variety of wet flies including shrimp were used.”

“Abundant good sport was had on the rainbow trout lakes last week, with a couple of larger fish amongst those recorded (5.5lbs and 8lbs).
Successful flies on the rainbow trout lakes included GRHE, BFD, Montana, Daddy, Cats whisker, buzzer, caddis and blood worm.

Thank you very much to the committee and all those who helped and attended the autumn barbecue yesterday. Despite a cold wind, the fine food provided by Rob and Poppett ensured a very happy event.”

“The autumn topping-up of the rainbow trout lakes is well underway, with members already getting some good sport.
Successful flies included daddy long-legs, Copper John, green buzzer, PTN, Montana and Adams. The brown trout were also going for Dawson’s olive, Butcher, Stonefly and Damsel.
Another fine sea trout was caught (and released). It weighed about 3.5 lbs.”

“With the water temperature in the lakes now dropping significantly, the catch and release option has returned to the rainbow trout lakes.

Upper Lake – Little Bognor

Fish were rising freely at Little Bognor but the weekend rain and the sudden change in the water temperature, slowed down the fishing. I used a black gnat and cast to cruising fish.

“Water temperatures on the rainbow trout lakes are dropping nicely, earlier than the last few years. Another carp (5lb) was caught at Upper Figgs.
Successful flies at our other waters last week included daddy long-legs, teal blue and silver, black gnat, blue flash damsel, beaded GHRE, Greenwell’s Glory, CDC and various dry flies.
Despite 42mm rain over two days causing the river level to rise a metre and slightly colour it, it still remained fishable. I expect it to settle quickly back to normal conditions in the coming days.”

At the brown trout lakes, daddy, emerger, Klinkhammer, Grey Wulff, suspended buzzer, CDC, Caenis and Coch-y-Bondu were all successful.

I fished the river over the weekend in ideal conditions. A few fish were moving mid-afternoon. Prospecting under the alder trees and alongside the streamer weeds produced a trout about 2lbs on a weighted GRHE nymph.

My grandson, Finnley Sparks, a junior member, visited Little Bognor for the first time on Sunday and caught two nice fish. The first on a black buzzer (picture above) and the second on a black dry fly. Both fish were returned.

On both the river and the lakes, a quiet approach and accurate presentation produces results.

Gold rimmed half moon spectacles were found along the river below Keepers Bridge, they have been left in the signing-in box.
